2026年6月29日 marks a significant occasion, commemorating the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the 75th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet, and the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Yunnan-Tibet Highway. In this momentous year, the Yunnan Highway Bureau unveiled the Yunnan-Tibet Highway Historical and Cultural Exhibition.
Stretching from Xigui in Dali, Yunnan, where it connects with the Yunnan-Burma Road, the highway extends northward to Mangkang in Tibet's昌都 region, linking up with the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. The main route spans 715 kilometers in total, traversing through various locations including Dali, Lijiang, Diqing in Yunnan, and Mangkang in Tibet.
The construction of the highway was divided into five segments, involving years of arduous effort spanning 23 years. The main route was declared fully open to traffic in November 1973, marking a transformative change in the transportation landscape of the remote Yunnan-Tibet border region. On July 6, 1976, Xinhua News Agency released the announcement of the successful completion and official opening of the Yunnan-Tibet Highway.
